James practices in all areas of planning, environment and local government law including:
• merits appeals and declaratory proceedings in the Planning and Environment Court;
• Land Court proceedings;
• criminal and quasi criminal proceedings (including matters related to the energy and resource industries,
contaminated land, the demolition of protected buildings and vegetation clearing);
• judicial review proceedings; and
• proceedings related to the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 in the
James acts for a broad array of clients including many local governments, shopping centre owners and operators, major residential developers, major quarry operators as well those involved in the energy and resource industries.
James has been involved in a number of the largest cases to be heard by the Planning and Environment Court including the R F Thompson case and Gold Coast Quarry case (both of which involved about 8 weeks of Court time).
James also acted for the successful appellant in the 2018 High Court case of Pike v Tighe (led by Danny Gore QC). The Pike case was the first Planning and Environment Court case to be granted special leave since 2006.
Since 2013, James has been ranked as either a preeminent or leading junior counsel by Doyle’s Guide for planning and environment matters.
